Understanding Licensing for International Nurses in the U.S.

Travel nursing jobs in the United States can help you boost your nursing career. First, you’ll gain the benefits of working in different clinical settings to build your resume, plus you’ll experience the unique advantages that working in the U.S. provides.

banner-9As you prepare for international travel nursing, you’ll need to pass your licensing exam to practice nursing in the United States and complete your immigration paperwork. If you know the steps you should follow and what to expect, it can make the licensing process much easier.

Licensing for international nurses

In the United States, each individual state requires you to obtain a license to practice nursing. Your first step should be deciding which of the 50 states you wish to work in. Since each state has different requirements to take the licensing exam, learn what qualifications you’ll need. You can find out more by contacting the Board of Nursing for that state, or by speaking to your recruiter.

Schedule your National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX)

If you meet the requirements for nurse licensure for your state, you can register to take the NCLEX. Different rules apply if you’ll be taking it domestically (within the United States or U.S. territories, including American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands or U.S. Virgin Islands) or internationally (outside the U.S. and U.S. territories).

To take your exam domestically, you can schedule a date at a testing facility by contacting Pearson VUE online or by phone. To take your exam internationally, you’ll need to contact Pearson VUE by phone and schedule your exam at testing facility near you. An international testing fee applies.

Your testing center may change after you schedule your exam. If this happens, you will be contacted by Pearson VUE to reschedule your exam at a specified testing location. If you decide to reschedule to take your exam within the United States, you will receive a refund of your international testing fee.
