Traveler’s Guide To Nursing and Allied Health: Top Paying Nursing Specialties

Nurses are in demand nationwide, but only one of the nursing specialties ranks number one in pay. Chief nursing anesthetist topped the list of 2023 highest-paying nursing jobs in a recent Nursing Process article. Nursing Process based its list on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. All registered nursing jobs are expected to grow by 6 percent between 2021 to 2031. However, pay can differ significantly between specialties.

The list’s top-10 nursing jobs based on average salary were:

  1. Chief nursing anesthetist – $211,500
  2. Certified registered nurse anesthetist – $189,190
  3. Dean of Nursing – $185,466
  4. Chief nursing informatics officer – $159,849
  5. Chief nursing officer – $16,250
  6. Chief nurse practitioner – $145,000
  7. Travel nurse – $118,270
  8. Director of Nursing – $117,996
  9. Certified nurse midwife – $117,552
  10. Nurse practitioner – $115,195

Of course, the highest-paying nursing specialties have advantages and disadvantages, such as financial security and promotion versus long hours and added responsibility. Visit Nursing Process for the full list of the 50 highest-paying nursing jobs for 2023.

Workforce Shortage

All nursing jobs are in high demand as many healthcare professionals retire or switch careers. Approximately 100,000 nurses left the profession during the COVID-19 pandemic. Another 800,000 are expected to leave by 2027, according to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing and the National Forum of State Nursing Workforce Centers. A recent Becker’s article listed med-surg as one of the most difficult positions to fill. Considered by some as a starting point for their career, med-surg requires a broad knowledge base. The mass exodus has put added pressure on working staff, facilities, and educational institutions tasked with graduating the next generation of nurses. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing reported more than 90 thousand qualified applicants were turned away from nursing schools in 2021 due to a lack of faculty.
