The ICU nurse provides patient care as well as education and support for patients’ families. An ICU/critical care nurse has the skills and knowledge to manage the care of patients who have life-threatening problems that require complex assessment, high-intensity therapies and interventions.
The duties of the job include ensuring proper functioning of life support equipment such as ventilators and feeding tubes, observing patients’ heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration for signs of distress, administering medication, IVs, and inserting catheters.
The nurses in these positions need to document medication administration meticulously. They also need to assist in emergency procedures that are necessary to control a patient’s condition, including performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation accurately and effectively.
In order to qualify for these travel assignments, you must have an active RN license, a nursing degree from an accredited program, BLS and ACLS certification, and at least two years of recent experience in an acute care ICU setting.
