Being away from home during the holidays can be especially hard. You can stay in touch over the telephone, with email, Facebook and other social media. But there are other things you can do as well to keep your loved ones and friends close, make meaningful connections, and keep them as a part of your life. Here are a few ideas from traveling nurses.
This may seem a little old fashioned, but it really does help make connections in a unique way. A handwritten letter is personal; more personal than an email. Letters are not only enjoyable to write, they’re fun to receive. There is a sense of anticipation when you go to the mailbox.
Write down your experiences during your travel assignment, both at work and outside of work. Tell a story with your letters. Then, when you return home, you and your spouse can put together a scrapbook of the letters to commemorate your trip.
Skype or Facetime
These are easy ways to stay connected to friends and family. You can hear and see your loved ones.
Collect items for a scrapbook
During your assignment, collect items that tell about the places you have been. These could be brochures or pictures, or other objects. Then, when you return, you can use these items to make a scrapbook with your family or friends to tell them about your experience.
Send pictures and gifts
Sharing pictures and gifts with friends and family is a great way to stay connected. These could be pictures of your new location or other souvenirs.
Share books and movies
If you have read a book you think they would like, send it to them. Let them know about movies you think they would like as well. Encourage them to do the same.
