Millions of people world-wide are affected by cancer each year. According to the American Cancer Society, in 2018 in the U.S., there will be an estimated 1,735,350 new cancer cases and 609,640 cancer deaths. That breaks down to approximately 3 new cases and 1 death every minute in the U.S. Oncology nurses work firsthand with patients who are suffering from cancer or who are undergoing treatments for cancer. These nurses also educate and take care of those patients who are at a high risk for cancer or in remission from cancer. Due to the continued growth of new cancer cases each year, the demand for oncology nurses could potentially increase 19% by the year 2022 according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is faster than the growth level of other jobs across the country. One organization is working to help these Oncology Nurses and Oncologists by drastically improving the survival rates of those diagnosed with cancer.
Stand Up To Cancer is a non-profit organization whose mission is to “raise funds to accelerate the pace of groundbreaking translational research that can get new therapies to patients quickly and save lives now.” The organization brings together the best and the brightest researchers around the globe and mandates collaboration throughout the cancer community. In addition, by involving the entertainment industry, Stand Up To Cancer has set out to generate awareness, educate the public on cancer prevention, and help more people diagnosed with cancer become long-term survivors.
100% of donations received from the public support Stand Up To Cancer’s collective cancer research programs. Their unique research models are expertly designed to initiate teamwork, accelerate the pace of cancer research, and clear the way for high-impact breakthroughs. Stand Up To Cancer breaks down the traditional barriers to collaboration by allowing scientists and researchers across institutions and disciplines to come together and work toward a shared goal: beating cancer. To date, more than 180 clinical trials have been funded by Stand Up To Cancer, and over $480 million has been pledged to the work of more than 1,500 scientists. Their projects are large enough to allow scientists to work together on key questions, and their milestone-driven approach focuses efforts on delivering truly meaningful outcomes for patients.
In addition, Stand Up To Cancer understands the importance of awareness. The strength of their message hinges on their ability to reach a vast audience. Through partnership with the entertainment community and supporters, Stand Up To Cancer can share important, timely messages on a large scale and raise funds for cutting-edge research. Their largest and most successful campaign is the “One Night to Save Lives” 2018 Stand Up To Cancer Live fundraising special. This event brings together all the television networks and the biggest stars in entertainment, for one night of music, laughter, and inspiration. With a dazzling array of top talent from TV, film, sports and more, Stand Up To Cancer will return on Friday, September 7th at 8pm EST for the sixth roadblock telecast co-executively produced by Bradley Cooper, Academy Award®-nominated actor. This year’s event marks an important milestone in the organization’s history.
