October 24-30th – Respiratory Care Week

Each October, National Respiratory Care Week recognizes the role of respiratory therapists and the importance of promoting lung health. Respiratory therapists were often unheard of before the COVID-19 pandemic. These healthcare professionals have been an integral part of healthcare systems for decades.

Respiratory therapists have played a lifesaving role in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic and the severe respiratory issues it can cause. Respiratory therapists provide the expertise in operating ventilators, monitoring breathing and circulation, engaging in respiratory distress, and airway management.

We often take involuntary actions such as breathing for granted. Your entire respiratory system contains tissues and organs that support absorbing oxygen from the air throughout the body. Aside from breathing, the respiratory system removes waste gases, such as carbon dioxide, enables talk and smell, and protects your airways from irritants. Chronic conditions such as allergies, disease, infection, and asthma can create long-term lung and respiratory issues.

Being able to clear mucus out of the lungs and airways is important for respiratory health. To keep your respiratory system healthy, you should:

  • Avoid pollutants that can damage your airways, including secondhand smoke, chemicals, and radon (a radioactive gas that can cause cancer). Wear a mask if you are exposed to fumes, dust, or other types of pollutants for any reason.
  • Don’t smoke.
  • Eat a healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables and drink water to stay hydrated.
  • Exercise regularly to keep your lungs healthy.
  • Prevent infections by washing your hands often and getting a flu vaccine each year.
