National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, April 24

A key observance takes place this weekend in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day event, courtesy of the Drug Enforcement Administration (FDA). It invites people around the country to empty out their respective medicine cabinets, both safely and anonymously, and drop off drugs at designated areas in their communities.

The mission of the observance is to address an ongoing opioid crisis, while bringing to light public medicinal health and safety standards. A study in 2019, by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), found that 9.7 million people misused prescriptions, specifically painkillers, while5.9 misused tranquilizers or sedatives and 4.9 misused stimulants. The staggering majority was also found to have obtained the medications from family and friends. In 2020, the observance saw 4,153 law enforcement participants donate across a total of 4,587 collection sites. The total collected amassed over 985,300 pounds, which equals out to roughly 492.7 tons of disposed medications.

You can find a collection site in your area HERE, host a drop-off HERE (law enforcement and healthcare professionals ONLY) and even find year-round pharmaceutical disposal clinics, HERE. One can also find numerous home disposal methods as well, courtesy of the DEA’s Diversion Control Division.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is currently slated to take place from 10am – 2pm on Saturday, April 24, 2021.
