Celebrating our Valued Essential Healthcare Professionals on National Nurses Day

National Nurses Day is a significant observance each-and-every year, but following an unprecedented year like 2020 and, considering all that our valued frontline essential healthcare providers have done for us, this year just seems that much more important.

Since the tail end of the 19th century, Florence Nightingale, the ‘Lady with the Lamp’, who revolutionized the nursing profession, the industry has seen important strides for both nurses and patients. The day allows us to recognize just how important the role nurses play in our lives is. They are the heart and soul of the healthcare system. There are almost five million nurses in the U.S. today and make up the highest percentage of employees in the U.S. healthcare industry.

The weeklong event was first observed in October of 1954 as part of the 100th anniversary of Nightingale’s work. In 1974, U.S. President Richard Nixon anointed National Nurses Week would be celebrated annually in May.

Ways to Celebrate Nurses as Part of National Nurses Day and Nurses Week

  1. Thank the nurses in your life, whether colleagues, your employees, family, friends, or those caring for you at the moment. Sharing your gratitude for their tireless efforts is important.
  2. Educate yourself about the women who paved the way for the industry and apply it to just how far the profession has come and its importance in the industry.
  3. Lend an ear, because nurses are the backbone of our healthcare system, but they are also the most-trusted profession and are constantly tending to patients, as well as family and friends, so chances are, they have a lot to talk about.
  4. Throw them a party, book them a spa day to help them unwind, buy them a gift basket or a floral arrangement or book them a trip, just to name a few.
