National Influenza Vaccination Week: December 6-12, 2020

It is National Influenza Vaccination Week and, for obvious reasons, it is extra important to be properly vaccinated this year. We are entering an unprecedented winter in which the annual flu and cold influenzas are circulating, but this will be the first time we have had to combat those two, as well as the surging COVID-19 virus too. It remains a mystery as to who the three will coexist this season.

This weeklong event spotlights the importance of maintaining proper vaccination health during the holiday season. The flu typically arrives in mid- to late-October, but trends up from December to February, whereas the novel Coronavirus has been nearly a year-round disease.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests all persons, over 6-months-old, get the flu vaccination. Those individuals who are currently considered high risk include: children, especially those with neurological issues, pregnant women, anyone 65-years-old and up, as well as people with pre-existing conditions like heart disease, diabetes, asthma, cancer and HIV or AIDS.

The flu vaccine is given by way of a shot, but is now offered as a nasal spray as well. In observing National Influenza Vaccination Week, it is important to:

  • Know the misconceptions of the flu shot (or nasal spray), especially the presumed ‘side effects’ that are associated with being vaccinated.
  • Help prevent the spread of germs: wear a mask and practice proper handwashing techniques.
  • Know the flu symptoms versus those of COVID-19 because both attack the respiratory tract.
