National Handwashing Awareness Week: November 30-December 6, 2020

In 2020, more than ever, clean hands save lives. Personal hygiene starts with our hands and proper maintenance can prevent the spread of germs and sickness.

We are the greatest risk to each other, especially in the time of COVID-19. For instance, a sneeze exits the body at almost 200 miles-per-hour and includes over 40,000 droplets that are emitted into the air. In fact, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has also reported that only 31% of men washed their hands after using public restrooms. Women were better, at just around 65%.

Washing your hands can help prevent 1-in-5 infections, including the flu! For children, it can help ward off 1-in-3 diarrhea-related illnesses as well. Roughly 1.4 million 5-year-old children and younger die from stomach bacteria and pneumonia each year. Handwashing can be made into a family activity too, offering reminders and rewards to encourage children to wash. Parents should lead by example and, should there not be soap and water available, keep both hand sanitizer and wipes at the ready. These products should have at least 60% alcohol in them. Some other best practices include:

  • Utilizing the five steps of hand washing: wet, lather, scrub, rinse and dry.
  • Make sure to wash your hands when they are dirty, especially before eating.
  • Do not cough or sneeze into your hands, but rather your elbow and away from others.
  • Do not put your fingers in your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Taking the Coronavirus into consideration, be sure to wear masks and properly social distance.
