Travel assignments can be incredibly rewarding and exciting for a travel nurse, but they can also become challenging at times. Every assignment is different, each with new staff members, patients, and lessons to learn. If you are dealing with an overwhelming assignment here are some ways to help cope:
1. Practice some easy breathing exercises
Taking deep breaths is a powerful tool in relieving stress, anxiety, and depression. You can either practice the breathing exercises listed here, or you can download an app like Headspace, which is full of easy meditations that only take about 10 minutes to complete.
2. Make some time for exercise
The CDC reports that “regular physical activity can help keep your thinking, learning, and judgment skills sharp as you age. It can also reduce your risk of depression and may help you sleep better.” Make some time for exercise after or before your shift in order to reap these benefits and reduce stress in a healthy way (while also keeping your heart healthy!).
3. Try and eat healthy meals and snacks
People underestimate the power of a healthy diet. By eating nutritious foods, you can beat depression and stress. Magnesium helps support serotonin in the brain, which helps with your moods. Foods high in magnesium include avocados, spinach, and quinoa. The brain also needs healthy fats like olive oil and chia seeds, which can help beat depression.
4. Find a support system
When all else fails, there is nothing more powerful than a support system. Call your family members or make a date to have a cup of coffee with a friend. Try and make friends at your facility, or maybe even spend more time with your pets and go for longer walks with your dog if you have one. Social media is a great way to reach out to others, as is Skype and FaceTime. Your recruiter is there for you to listen, and therapy can also be an option for those seeking professional help during a rough time.
