credit card

As a foreign-trained health professional, it can be challenging adjusting to the concept of establishing credit in the U.S. and being able to maintain good credit.

Credit is necessary for many different aspects of living in the U.S. such as increasing your credit limit on your card for large purchases, buying or financing a car, financing furniture, or looking to rent and buy property.

How can a foreign-trained health professional keep their score up easily? Just follow these five easy tips!

1. Set up automatic payments
The majority of credit card companies allow for you to set up an automated payment each month before the due date, which automatically takes out the minimum payment per month. This is great for those of us who lead busy lives and might forget to pay our card on time (it happens!). It’s totally free, and it’s a lifesaver.

2. Keep your balances low
Be sure to only use your card for what you know you can afford to pay at the end of your billing cycle. Don’t spend a bunch of money and then get a statement for an amount you cannot afford. While sure, you can pay off your debt over time, it will hurt your credit score and can cause a lot of stress. Keep balances low and pay them off fully per month.

3. Create a monthly budget
One of the best ways to be able to stay on top of your credit score and keep it high is to be sure to create a monthly budget so you know what you can afford. This will help ensure you don’t run up your balance and be unable to pay it at the end of the month. You can budget groceries, rent, and other necessities, and then see how much money you have left to either spend on something nice, or save for the future.

4. Don’t try and keep up with everyone else
While you might have a friend with an expensive car, a nice handbag, or a beautiful dress, there is no need to feel like you have to keep up with them. Your real friends will not judge  you based on what kind of items you can afford to buy. Instead of spending money trying to impress other people when those items are out of your budget range, be smart and save for long-term goals.
