Ask a Recruiter: What Housing Benefits Do Travel Healthcare Professionals Receive?

As you prepare for travel nursing jobs, housing is a major consideration. Of course you’ll need a place to stay, and you’ll want to make arrangements for your temporary home before you depart for your assignment. You can work with your MedPro recruiter to find travel nursing housing for yourself and anyone you may be traveling with, such as your family and/or pets. Here’s what you need to know before you go!

MedPro travel RN housing options

For your housing on travel nursing assignment, you have two options: You can accept a corporate housing assignment, or you can opt for a housing stipend in the form of a per diem reimbursement. MedPro’s standard housing allowance provides a one-bedroom apartment, on your own or with another traveler. But we understand if you are traveling with family and need a larger place to live. Your MedPro recruiter will work with you to find a suitable residence that accommodates all family members and is pet friendly, if required. You will need to cover any costs above and beyond our standard housing allowance, which most nurses choose to process as a payroll deduction.

Finding your own housing

If you’re an adventurous sort, you may be more inclined to secure your own place to stay—and that’s fine! You might consider options such as vacation rentals, Extended Stay Hotels or Residence Inns, and of course apartments. Whatever your choice, you can always reach out to your MedPro recruiter if you need help finding somewhere to live. We’re experts at locating clean, safe housing within a reasonable commuting distance to your placement.

Tax-free travel expenses

Like many nursing staffing agencies, MedPro will help you understand the tax considerations of travel healthcare work. You may qualify to be reimbursed for your travel expenses tax-free if you meet three conditions set by the IRS:

  1. You have a permanent tax home.
  2. Your travel healthcare placement is NOT within commuting distance of your tax home.
  3. Your assignment plus any extensions cannot last longer than a year.

If you meet these three requirements, you will not owe any taxes on your travel reimbursements. If you have any questions about your permanent tax home, you can check with your recruiter or work with your tax advisor.
